3-Day Cape Camino: Make Your Own Cheese
Walk 40km along the West Coast, and end with a cheese making course at the famous Afsaal Padstal. Alta from Afsaal is famous for her cheese and on your last day you'll learn to make (and take home) her special halloumi and feta cheeses.
"Our Camino was so much more than we expected. What did I learn from all of this? The fear of the unknown can be overwhelming. The chaperones were so encouraging and supportive. Life is like that. We meet people who need some support and encouragement. It costs nothing to give a kind word, a helping hand. Do what you can when you see a need that you can fulfil. Hats off to your amazing hosts and chaperones. The food was outstanding, the accommodation varied on this short trip but very appropriate. Thank you for the service that you provide in facilitating these journeys of discovery in our own country." Jenny Purdy, October 2025

Camino Itinerary
Day 0: Arrival at Lampiesbaai rest house
Meet fellow pilgrims and settle into the rest house. Arrive anytime after 4pm and before dark.
Day 1: Lampiesbaai ➝ Paternoster (23km)
Beach walk to Paternoster, one of the oldest fishing villages on the west coast of South Africa with many dining options.
We have several rest houses in Paternoster, from the local Hotel to seaside eco-cabins and local home stays.
"On the 1st day the weather was very kind to us. The distance was fairly long but the terrain was easy. Long flat beaches with damp firm sand. Our host and chaperone, Maggie, was so sweet. She pointed out buildings along the way and told us their stories. The connection with the rhythm of the ocean talked to my soul. The beauty of the coastline stretching for miles and miles in both directions was inspirational. The local people were all so friendly and helpful. The accommodation at the eco village was comfortable and located right on the shore. We were able to witness a spectacular sunset. We met a few other people there who were not on pilgrimage." Day 2: Paternoster ➝ Afsaal (17km)
Some sections are tough, with loose stones and uneven paths, sturdy shoes are essential. Chaperones from Pelgrims Place Rehabilitation Centre walk with you. Tides and terrain shift often, so stay alert and open to the unexpected.
Alta Nel from Afsaal, crafts artisanal cheese every day from their one cow and sells it, and other delights, from her padstal.
"Our 2nd day was so different from the first. The distance was shorter but the coastline became rugged and challenging. The waves pounded the rocks and showed their power. We scrambled over boulders, negotiated narrow paths and soft sand dunes. Our chaperone, Jean, guided us safely and helped us when necessary. We eventually reach Afsaal Padstal where we were introduced to the most delightful lady, Alta." Jenny Purdy
Day 3: Afsaal
Cheese-making course after breakfast with Alta. Approximately 4hrs.
Take home all the halloumi and feta you have made.
